Aquatic nitrogen transformations at low oxygen concentrations.

چکیده

Nitrite and nitrous oxide made up 40% of the hypolimnetic dissolved inorganic nitrogen in mesotrophic Lake Rotoiti, New Zealand, prior to hypolimnetic anoxia. Up to 120 mg of N m-3 as nitrite and 20 mg of N m-3 as nitrous oxide accumulated, whereas dissolved-oxygen concentrations remained between 1.0 and 0.2 g m-3 and were totally consumed when the hypolimnion became completely anoxic. Assays of water column nitrification potentials, together with measurements of the relative rates of nitrate and nitrite reduction, suggested that at low dissolved-oxygen concentrations both nitrite and nitrous oxide were produced mainly by ammonium-oxidizing bacteria, with nitrous oxide being a product of nitrifier denitrification.

Media Optimization for the Decolorization of Distillery Spent Wash by Biological Treatment using Pseudomonas Fluorescence

The wastewater released from distilleries and fermentation industries are the major source of soil and aquatic pollution due to presence of water-soluble recalcitrant colouring compounds called melanoidins. Biological decolourisation of of these compounds found more advantages compared to chemical treatments. Hence in this study, the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens showing higher decolorizati...

Supersaturated N2O in a perennially ice-covered Antarctic lake: Molecular and stable isotopic evidence for a biogeochemical relict

The east lobe of Lake Bonney, a permanently ice-covered lake in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, has a mid-depth maximum N2O concentration of 43.3 mmol N L21 (.700,000% saturation with respect to air), representing one of the highest concentrations reported for a natural aquatic system. d15N and d18O measurements indicate that this is the most isotopically depleted N2O yet observed in a nat...

Evaluation of the Limnological Status of Beeshazar Lake, a Ramsar Site in Central Nepal

Lack of monitoring and implementation of appropriate management practices and strategies in compliance with the Ramsar Convention obligations have been contributing to severe degradation of Beeshazar Lake, a Ramsar site in central Nepal. The surface water quality and characteristics of underlying sediments were studied to determine the limnological status of the lake. Water quality in Beeshazar...

Efficiency of Microalgae Scenedesmus in the Removal of Nitrogen from Municipal Wastewaters

Background: Due to the high content of nitrogen in the municipal wastewaters, this study evaluated the efficiency of Scenedesmus as an important microalgae in the removal of nitrate from wastewaters and its application as an appropriate culture medium. As algae have high resistance to temperature and pH changes, they can absorb low concentrations of nutrients and need simple low-cost technolog...

A numerical analysis of hypolimnetic nitrogen and phosphorus transformations in Lake Rotoiti, New Zealand: A geothermally influenced lake

Measurements of chlorophyll, oxygen, and particulate and dissolved forms of nitrogen and phosphorus made over a year were used in a one-dimensional diffusion model to calculate rates of generation or loss of these substances in the hypolimnion of Lake Rotoiti, New Zealand. During summer stratification the hypolimnion was always a sink for chlorophyll, particulate nitrogen (PN), particulate phos...
